I’ve got a semi

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

…final review (sort of – not really).

As you know all 3 teams made the semi’s. Normally you’d think that’d be good enough for the club championship. Somehow though it wasn’t and we lost that trophy by a mere 3 points. Somebody define the word anguish for me because I think I want to use it. Bad luck piggers, a commendable result. Although thinking about it you won’t even get a certificate for the effort so, in reality, not really all that commendable at all.

On to the semi’s. None of them are actually reviews per se, because I didn’t see any of them and nobody sent me anything to post. So forgive any vagueness.

Black pigs had a very impressive win verses Centrals by 167 runs in the C Grade semi-final. They now face Maq Uni in the final. Last time these foes met Maq Uni won at Allan Small so Black won’t have it easy. They also met in round 1 where we squeaked a close win in a 1-dayer. The main opponent to look out for seems to be some guy named P Madhanagopal. He’s proficient with bat, ball and gloves. He batted twice last week in the same innings and looking at many of their previous results they bat him twice in nearly every match! You guys (Michael Eckstein et al) should probably call him out on that as it might be against the rules.

B grade boys in Brown, umm… lost by a margin which suggests that, if I may borrow a sporting commentators cliché, they failed to turn up. Nuf said. Silver lining is that they are now available to noisily lend their support to the Pink Pigs this week.

Yes, A-reserve had a massive win against the Bonnons in the Semi. Whitaker, Stato, Fabo, Bucky and Stewart all taking wickets with the ball, so that bodes well for the final which is against North Shore who – if I am not mistaken – won the club championship (I smell vendetta dot dot dot). Last time Pink Pigs beat this very same team at this very same venue, so lets keep up our good record at Gore Hill and take home this trophy! I might actually turn up to this one. Oh what a glorious weekend of sport this is promising to be.

So good luck to everyone. Lets pump it up!!

Brown Pigs season review

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

By Guy Mordaunt

A committed squad of B graders began the season against West Pymble with stars in their eyes and a dream in their hearts. A solid bowling performance knocked over the opposition for only 130 but it was too much for the chasers as 2009/10 began with disappointment. That loss to the eventual table toppers saw the start of an unwelcome monkey on the back that overstayed his welcome this season. A little game called lets see if we can still win even if we drop 5 catches every innings. Not the finest achievement of the season and it wasn’t until the third round we really put in a solid performance against the bye. Confidence up, B grade went one better next week with a win over NSSC. This saw the first 100 of the season for Nick Dowd and started a run of form that has seen him not miss since. Averaging 75 at the end of the regular season he has scored runs in every victory the team has had this season and it has been awesome to watch him bat. The highlight was undoubtedly the 143 Vs The Dreggs. That match saw The Dreggs chase down 8 an over to inflict a close defeat on the Pigs. This was followed the next week by another last over heart breaker against Kirribilli that had the semi finals seeming like a long way away at Christmas. With 2009 and the financial crisis behind us 4 wins and a rain affected draw plus a battling display on day 2 against The Nemesis(Dreggs) saw fourth spot secured and the dream still alive. An inconsistent season has seen a lot of wins and a lot of losses but the Pigs are still alive and in the semi’s. The fielding has certainly improved leaps and bounds and when the team performs at its best they are absolutely unbeatable.

There have been plenty of highlights this season. The team has remain pretty consistent through out and a great bunch of guys have played the game in good spirit and had a laugh. It must be said that for the most part in B grade the opposition do exactly the same thing and it makes the competition very enjoyable. The Chris Cairns coifered Nick Dowd certainly gets MVP honours and has led from all fronts all year. Well done to Nick on a great season and may it long continue. On day two against NSSC he not only scored a ton but took three wickets and two cracking catches. In the same game a born again batsman called Matty J put on 100 with Nick for the first of several telling contributions with the willow this year. D-Train has smashed the ball to all parts averaging 62 including smashing an amazing 48 off one over. Never seen, heard or imagined that before. Kato scored a great 68 on debut and it will be nice to have him back for the semi’s now that his Celebrity Master Chef commitments are over. Josh must get a mention for a stellar season as the main strike bowler taking plenty of wickets and deserving a lot more. A personal 5 wicket haul against league leaders West Pymble a well deserved personal highlight. Paddy wins fielder of the year taking some absolute screamers including catch of the year as well as almost getting us over the line against Kirribilli with his best ever score. Nick Ward has made telling contributions with the ball this year including a couple of extremely valuable 3′fers and Jimmy wins the Purple Heart for being injure in the line of duty. Joe Milne continues to do a great Craig McMillan impression and has been a constant in the side this year. He continues to be the coolest man playing cricket on the North Shore has contributed with bat and ball and shone in the field. Matt Tenney’s hundred in the last match was just reward for his commitment to the boys and he always gives hundreds and is never out. Never! It always pitched outside leg. After the worst game ever James Madden has continued to take the shine off the new ball at the top of the order and has recently put in a couple of solid performances behind the stumps. All the regular players have made important contributions throughout the year which has been fantastic.

With the first goal achieved the finals should bring some exciting cricket from B grade. Glad to see all three teams through to the semi’s and hopefully this can be the best season yet for the entire Pigs CC.

Tenney shines as Brown Pigs make final!

Scorecard

So it all comes down to this!

After a season of ebb and flow, glory and defeat the mighty B grade pigs had there future in their own hands. Beat lowly Comenarra and a semi-final berth awaits; lose and it was in the hands of the gods. Not since the first diamond was create has there been pressure like this.

Things started well for the pigs:

  1. After an unfortunate incident involving sand and a vagina Matt Tenney had sorted himself out and turned up to play.
  2. Ben the Chincilla(not sure if that is the correct spelling) was making his pigs debut. Tears were shed as he was presented the pink hat.
  3. Guy lost the toss.

It was all coming up Pigs.

Things took a swift turn for the worst as the Comenarra chose first to bat and then to spank the shite out of pretty good bowling. The D-Train tends to get derailed at this ground and no matter what he bowls it seems to get dispatched to the concrete. When Josh wasn’t beating the edge it was flying to the boundary and the first round of applause went up for a fifty when we were in the 8th over. The Chincilla even announced himself as a true member of the team by running from fine leg to mid on to drop a catch. A man after our own hearts.

At 120 for none things were looking bleak but the pigs were up for this and keeping the enthusiasm high 2 wickets in 2 balls swung things back into balance. When the dangerous opening batsman was dismissed for 84 the pigs were on a role. 7 batsmen were bowled middle stump in a triumphant comeback that saw all 10 wickets fall for just 51 runs. Massive kudos for all the team, bowlers especially, holding their nerve and as we enjoyed the hot chips Josh shouted us for lunch quiet confidence exuded from the 12. Very quiet. Nobody wanted to jinx anything by mention semi finals.

There was talk of an averages battle for pig supremacy between Dowdy and the big fella but we all just knew a job needed to be done. As Mark stroked the first ball of the innings through the covers for 4 the battle began. A solid 50 run opening stand was undone by a ball of the century(so far…) that pitched outside off and took the D-Trains leg stump. Not something you see too often on artificial in Northern Suburbs B grade. The spin had Matt Tenney tied down and the next wicket fell relatively quickly but that only brought the Sandman to the crease. Not Mr Sandman by The Chordettes but Nick Dowd the Sandman of nightmares in a Metallica mould such is the misery he has wrought for opponents this year. A flurry of boundary’s and solid batting took the Pigs through to 140 with the game pretty much in the bag and the sideline relaxing. Tenney bought up his highest score for the Pigs as he entered the 70′s and it was remarked it was a shame he couldn’t go for his ton. Don’t tell Matthew what he can and cannot do!! Some creative bowling and aggressive batting had the scorers yelling the equation; 6 to win 10 for a 100. A boundary later had Dowd on strike, 2 to win, Tenney on 94 and the bowler giving the ball more air than Peter Sleep ever did. Nick took a single 4th ball tying the scores and leaving Matt to hit a six for the century. Every fielded evaporated to the fence, the slow clap began from the spectators and an angel cried. By the third slow clap the bowler was ready and speared an arm ball full toss into the thigh bad. Lil’ Matty Tenney swung his SS Jumbo with all his might. Nobody could see. The umpire was confused. Fine leg raised his arms in the air and Tenney got 100 not out stamped next to his named for prosperity. The boys on the bank went f@#kin mental, ( I even gave him a hug). Great comeback in the field and 177 for 2 chasing bodes well for the Semi’s. Bring it on.

PS James locked his keys in the car which was dumb.

Round 13: Pigs, Brown v Dreggs, The

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Scorecard

The Dreggs and the Pigs have faced off against each other many times in the history of the world, with the Dreggs carrying a win percentage of slightly more than 50%. This Round 13 encounter was vital to both teams chances of playing semi final cricket this year. A delightful green and lush Wellington Road Oval was the venue.

Captain Guy, zero and 5 on all tosses while captain really wanted to lose this toss as some disagreement was present in the camp prevailed as to the required tactic. Ironically (isn’t it), he won and elected to bat. Dowdy was pleased and even suggested that he might push himself down the order a bit if we get off to a good start so we could bat out the day. Laughter followed….followed by laughter.

Tenney opened the batting, to the usual Dreggs 8 slippers and was struck on the pads off the first ball. The loud appeal was turned down, the only time an appeal (whether loud or otherwise) for lbw was turned down by the trigger fingered Pigs for the balance of the match. This promising start (not losing a wicket on the first ball) was the highlight of the first innings. Tenney survived the first over, but, was out (yes, lbw) on the first ball of the second over. Pigs 1 for 1. Madden followed a short time later off a sharp caught and bowled. Both wickets to McDowell. Guy, scored……………………….., his second golden duck of the year. Ward was bowled. McDowell to 4. Joey Milne was looking solid and Dowdy promoted himself back up the order at 4 for 18. The extremely adventurous Milne then set off on a single that was not there, and in a Watson/Katich way, both batsman were found at the same end as the bales were removed from the other. 5 for 25, not the start sought and thoughts of the Pigs record lowest score entered the mind. The ever reliable Matty J joined Dowd and saved us from total humiliation (well not really) until Matty was bowled at 6 for 52. Dowdy then opened up and scored the remaining 14 runs in the innings, with Brad and Jeffrey not troubling the scores, with another 2 lbw decisions. Dowdy was caught by a good catch and could not save us any further. Pigs all out for 66, okayyyyy then. Good 5 wicket haul by McDowell.

Strategy was then simple – control the damage. No-one bravely thought of a first innings win, the aim was simple for the remaining 1.5 days, save the 2 points. Lucky we did not think about a first innings win, because, it was lost about 34 seconds later, with excellent batting by Hugh Brodie, backed up by Pearngey, saw the Dreggs with a healthy 100 run lead, with 4 wickets down, by stumps. Brodie brought up his century on the second last ball of the day with a sparkling 4, and was out the next ball.

Week 2 saw the return of The Manuelle and we sat on the Wellington Hill waiting to see what the Dreggs would do. Would they bat on for batting practice. Would they declare and put us away, or, alternatively, we all go to the pub, happy. Dreggs batted on to set out securing their first outright for a few year, but with some tight bowling (mostly), 4 wickets to Guy and 3 to the go to man Wardy, and some good catching in the outer by Clear (and dropping) and Hunter, the Dreggs were eventually all out for 251, shortly before the tea interval.

Pub, we suggested? No, thanks, said the Dreggs.

Jeffrey opened with Tenney and both looked good until Tenney was plumsky for 6. Jeffrey was smashing the short ones and skipped along to 25 before being sent – another lbw. Madden was skittled by McDowell and the Pigs were at a much improved, but shaky, 3 for 56. The Manuelle joined Dowdy in the middle at around 4pm and was dismayed at the instruction that the outright was off the cards (he had missed the email one week earlier when it was first off the cards), and he was not permitted to lose his wicket until 6pm. From there, we watched 2 hours of straight bat defensive shot play – absolutely exhilarating. Dreggs threw every bowler to try and sneak a loose shot, but, other than 4 massive 6s (he cannot help himself sometimes) by The Manuelle, neither was tempted. Eventually the Dreggs called it a day just before 6 and we had saved the 2 points. The important two points. Well done Dreggies. As usual, a game played in good spirit and good humour even in the slightly tense-er times, although, how do you shut up that keeper?

Now on to the final round of the regular season where hopefully a win gets us into the business end of the season.

Round 12: Brown Pigs v Kirribilli Crusaders match report

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

By Guy Mordaunt

Scorecard

The mighty B grade Pigs looked to keep the dream alive against Kirribilli on Sunday. Just outside the top 4 thanks to a recent weather conspiracy and with A reserves thrashing ringing in their ears there was everything to play for at the hallowed Blackman lower oval.

There were a few emotional scenes early as the debutants accepted the promotion to B grade with the humility and reverence it deserved. N Stewarts speech that all the effort and runs had finally paid off would’ve bought a tear to even D-Trains eye. Mordaunt went 0 and 4 on the coin toss and somehow the Pigs were batting.

A solid if unspectacular opening partnership got the Porkers through to the 12th over without loss before Matt “I’ve been on the booze for 7 weeks” Tenney’s luck finally ran out. Quickly followed by Mordaunt the Pigs were forty odd for 2. Bradman, Border and Ponting never batted together but today clad in Pig Pink N Dowd would get the chance to bat with N Stewart in a combination of strength not seen since Hulk Hogan and the Macho Man got together for Summer Slam ’88. The crowd settled in for an unparralled batting display before Nathan feathered one to the keeper and marched back to the shed to join the cricket sucks party in progress. A pretty steady pattern of comings and goings saw the Pigs struggle to get any momentum and only the ever reliable Matty J was able to stay with Dowdy for any period of time. When Nick was dismissed for another 60 the tail capitulated. We did get a chance to see who let the dogs out(woof woof) although he underwhelmed with 6 and was the last man to go in the 38th over leaving the desperate Pigs a sub par 151 to defend. Special mention must go to Luke Nasir for a solid 0 not out and even though he didn’t get to face a ball he put the pads on as well as anyone I’ve ever seen.

It would need to be a wow of a performance on an out field that hadn’t had the sheep on it for quite a while. The Pigs assembled and after dogs rousing pre match speech they marched out to do battle. A wicket in the second over was just the start they need and gave a sniff of an unlikely victory. Unfortunately then the Pigs of old returned to drop the familiar 5-7 catches a game. Thank god the under 12′s coach from the game before wasn’t there to tell us how ashamed of us he was. The dropped chances managed to keep us out of the game despite solid bowling from Josh ” the Dowdy of bowling” Sheldon, Nathan ” Batting sucks I’m a bowler” Stewart and Nick “no nickname” Dowd, Kirribilli were coasting at oranges at 90-3. A paltry 60 required, it was going to take something special from the piggers to keep the dream alive. Never let it said that B-grade don’t have heart for after some stirring words from the dawg(praise Christ, don’t do ice) special is what you got. Nasty Ned was solid picking up important wickets and two sensational runouts got the Pigs chargin. Antonio’s direct hit from side on to dismiss Barkworth a possible turning point as the catches began to stick and the crowd(Matt Seldon god bless ya) began to believe. Dowdy managed to buy a big wicket after seeing the ball disappear far and often off his 8th over and when Mordaunt held on to one to give Josh a deserved wicket Kirribilli still needed 18 with one wicket remaining. Stewart only needed one ball to collect his four for and the Pigs had pulled it out of the bag. With two games remaining B grade now has the luxury of knowing that success is in their hands. Form is improving and the last couple of close ones have gone our way. WOOF!
