Black Pigs win C grade trophy

Scorecard

The Black Pigs went into the C Grade final on a high, following a stunning victory in the semi final over the “Centrals”. The triumph was set up by two dominant batting performances in the first innings – Demo scoring 72 and Ned hitting a quick fire 89. Jack and Worm were also impressive, building strong partnerships for the 4th and 7th wickets. Chasing a total of 336, the Centrals crumbled under the heat of the Australian sun and the heat of Ned and Demo’s bowling. Jack and Chris ripped through the middle and late order and the match was over before you could say Rybarczyk.

So, onto the final the Black Piggies marched. There was much talk prior to the game of a bonding session involving 1kg schnitzels, but thankfully this never eventuated and all Pigs arrived at the match feeling fresh and fired up.

Macquarie Uni, who were coming off a controversial victory against North Shore, won the toss and elected to field, clearly afraid off the much vaunted Pigs bowling attack. Needless to say, this might have been a slightly erroneous decision.

Dog and Matt walked to the crease with a confident air about them. 20 overs later they walked back for a drink and Matt had chalked up a half-century. Talk about peaking at the right time. After some hard earned electrolytes they were out in the middle again. Matt had said to Dog something a long the lines of “This is us today mate, you and me. Our game”. He was bowled shortly after chasing Mac Uni’s spinner. Matt’s departure left Dog feeling a little antsy. He chased the Mac Uni spinner and was subsequently clean bowled.

Enter Fame and Stooke. Fame is C Grade’s pinch hitter – he pads up all day and when the captain says “get us some quick runs”, on he comes. And thus, on he came and henceforth quick runs were attained. Having done his job he packed his suitcase, turned the Out of Office on and popped one up to a thankful midwicket.

Stooke made a classy 30 odd before getting fired by our friendly professional umpire, adjudged LBW. He was filthy, really really filthy. Filthier than a dirty little pig covered in filth. The Mac Uni players went loco and on came Nasir and Demo. They both went (relatively) cheaply although Demo managed to land a few punishing blows before his departure. At this point the Pigs were not looking so comfortable, sitting on 6/190-something. What’s more, the brilliantly unpredictable stick work of Nasty Hands Ned was about to be on show. It was clear that this match was going to go one way or the other.

4161464262146666664161… the Mac Uni spinner’s figures were evidently, grossly disfigured and Nasty had made another quickfire 80 odd.

Meanwhile, Sneak Leaney had been quietly going about his business. Maybe inspired by Ned’s brutal handling of the bowling attack, he shortly thereafter pulled a number of glorious shots out from the kit bag, including his trademark cut – a shot he executes so beautifully it would make even the most hardened butcher cry.

With able support a long the way from Worm and Thommo, Sneak made his way to 97. 2 balls left in the day. Rosie down the other end, after smashing two huge sixes in the previous over. NOOOOOOO! Sneak ended up stranded on 97 after running a single and Rosie getting bowled. Nevertheless, 421 runs on the board a job well done. The “batting group” had performed and now it was up to the “bowling unit” to do their job.

The next day began beautifully. In front of Percy the Pig, Nasty cleaned bowled their most highly credentialed batsman. He opted to leave a ball outside off stump, unfortunately for him the ball magically changed direction and ripped out the aforementioned stump.

Demo then picked up the next key wicket after bowling some absolutely gorgeous lines. It was a joy to behold – watching the ball arrow into 2nd slips hands. Matt had caught one! And a big one at that.

Ned executed a very cheeky run out and Jack took some more scalps (can’t remember exactly what happened – short term memory has suffered due to activities on Sunday night) and then Fame came on to drop some hand grenades on the unsuspecting Mac Uni batsmen. He took a couple of relatively inexpensive wickets and it was looking like we would have the match wrapped up before lunch.

And so it was, Dog took the final wicket and the first of many VB tins were brought out. Happily, the Black Pigs then trotted down to Blackman Lower to watch the Pink Pigs win an absolute thriller. Nice work Weaver!

THE END.

Grand final weekend

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Gentlemen of the Pigs, Supporters, families, and friends,

Welcome to Grand Final weekend wherein the Pigs CC will field two teams. An astonishing achievement already – well done everyone, even the useless B Graders who could not hit a 100 runs against a team of all current players’ children (most of which are less than 4 years old) – firm, but fair.

Below is an email from the NSCA, all grand finalists please read (yes, that is the same Michael Clear – so behave).

Even better is that both games are at the same ground and I can assure you that the NSCA is looking forward to having two Pigs teams, and supporters, and Pigs, causing mayhem all weekend.

Photos – we will need a photo of each Grand Final Team for the NSCA, in full whites (can the chap in C Grade please roll down his trousers for the photos), and brown caps – so please be at the ground and take the photo at 12.40pm on Saturday. I would also like a club picture – so, I will try and organise that on Sunday at a time which is convenient so if you are yelled at to make your way for a quick photo, please do so. I will be mindful of people about to bat etc.

B Grade will be arriving throughout Saturday, but, will be there for all of Sunday. B Graders (and any other supporters of A and C), please try and be at the ground at 1pm on Sunday and we can settle in with a few quiet ones.

This Sunday will see a huge celebration at the Great Northern commencing shortly after we all leave the Blackman precinct. I will be booking a large area for all teams and all supporters so please show up just for a while (or all night). Beer will flow as will embellished stories from the season and hopefully one or two about the grand finals just played. Please invite all your friends, spectators etc to celebrate with us. Please leave your motor vehicles at home.

Best of luck everyone, and congratulations again for a great season. Whatever happens this weekend, ending up with 3 teams in the semis, 2 in the Grand Final and most other teams supporting us over our respective opponents this weekend suggests this club had a good season.

You know who you are

I’ve got a semi

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

…final review (sort of – not really).

As you know all 3 teams made the semi’s. Normally you’d think that’d be good enough for the club championship. Somehow though it wasn’t and we lost that trophy by a mere 3 points. Somebody define the word anguish for me because I think I want to use it. Bad luck piggers, a commendable result. Although thinking about it you won’t even get a certificate for the effort so, in reality, not really all that commendable at all.

On to the semi’s. None of them are actually reviews per se, because I didn’t see any of them and nobody sent me anything to post. So forgive any vagueness.

Black pigs had a very impressive win verses Centrals by 167 runs in the C Grade semi-final. They now face Maq Uni in the final. Last time these foes met Maq Uni won at Allan Small so Black won’t have it easy. They also met in round 1 where we squeaked a close win in a 1-dayer. The main opponent to look out for seems to be some guy named P Madhanagopal. He’s proficient with bat, ball and gloves. He batted twice last week in the same innings and looking at many of their previous results they bat him twice in nearly every match! You guys (Michael Eckstein et al) should probably call him out on that as it might be against the rules.

B grade boys in Brown, umm… lost by a margin which suggests that, if I may borrow a sporting commentators cliché, they failed to turn up. Nuf said. Silver lining is that they are now available to noisily lend their support to the Pink Pigs this week.

Yes, A-reserve had a massive win against the Bonnons in the Semi. Whitaker, Stato, Fabo, Bucky and Stewart all taking wickets with the ball, so that bodes well for the final which is against North Shore who – if I am not mistaken – won the club championship (I smell vendetta dot dot dot). Last time Pink Pigs beat this very same team at this very same venue, so lets keep up our good record at Gore Hill and take home this trophy! I might actually turn up to this one. Oh what a glorious weekend of sport this is promising to be.

So good luck to everyone. Lets pump it up!!

Season run-down for C grade

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

By Michael Eckstein

Following years of exile, the renegade mavericks known collectively as the Weapons, returned to the NSCA in 2009. Proudly marching under the Pigs banner, the newly christened Black Piggies began the season in style, defeating Mac Uni in a close encounter. A star was born that day – Jack “Wacko” Stooke scoring a century on debut, the first of three during the regular season.

A blip on the radar with a defeat second up was followed by a stirring outright victory under the leadership of Seamus O’Kane in the absence of regular captain-keeper-treeclimber-inspiration Luke Nasir. Dog picked up a ton and Jack laid claim to perfect human status with a bag of five in the second innings.

What was to follow for the next few games would be piles of runs from Demo, Sneak Leaney, Mick the Worm and Jack… heaps of wickets for Demo and Jack, and lots of dropped catches by The Faunt brothers. Of course, we also saw the return of the prodigal son / team hairdresser – Ned aka Nasty Hands. With Ned back in the side the Black Pigs undeniably had the strongest bowling attack in the universe – Demo, Rosie Rohanna, Nasty Ned and Benny “The Removalist” Fillingham chipping in when not on the beat jacking up crims in Marrickville.

The season followed a familiar pattern from there on in. A couple of major highlights included:

  • Defeating our friends at north shore (twice)
  • Worm turning up to a game sober (once)
  • Ned scoring 46 off about 10 balls at his favourite ground Alan Small
  • Chris Rees and Chris Thompson spinning us to victory when the chips were down.
  • Demo’s consistency with bat and ball, and minimising his tanties in the field.
  • The Faunt brothers taking a catch (in the warm up before the game).

The Black Pigs finished minor premiers and one day champions, and probably should have had the champion player but Jack was beaten to it by some bloke from North Shore.
